Lookbook: BLKKANGAROO’s Spring/ Summer 2015 Marketplace-inspired Collection.

Inspired by the vibrancy, colours, shapes, textures and atmosphere present throughout many African marketplaces, the latest collection from unisex clothing label BLKKANGAROO takes on concepts and items familiar with many Africans in different parts of the continent - from their coral beads graphic tees and their tartan ‘Ghana must go’ print t-shirts, to their woven bags and open-toe rope sandals that hint at the resourcefulness that has come to define daily life in parts of the continent.

GalenAto, Sterling (Top to Bottom, all 2014)

Black men are my brothers, father, family, friends, and colleagues. Black men are more than the hyper-sexualized and violent individuals portrayed by society. In this body of work, I seek to explore the vulnerability, power, and humanity of black masculinity. I want the viewer to become directly involved in the observed domestic environment of the subject. I do this by painting each man in an intimate relationship to his environment. The portraits reflect the variation within their spaces as an extension of the subject’s character, and so, I urge the audience to connect to the uniqueness of an individual instead of a social idea. Each subject has a mood, essence, and experience.
